Maryland gained 14,200 jobs in August and saw its unemployment rate fall below 4 percent for the first time since 2008.
The private-sector added 9,700 jobs in August, the fifth month this year to post over-the-month job gains, according to preliminary data released Friday by the U.S. Department of Labor.
Maryland's unemployment rate dropped to 3.9 percent in August from 4 percent. That is below the national average of 4.4 percent and is the lowest since May 2008 before the Great Recession.
